About the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO

The Ultimate Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R LM NISMO is the ultimate Nissan GT-R, the purest expression of innovation that excites. Competing in LM P1, the premier class of world sports car racing, Nissan’s Le Mans car is like no other car before it.

The car raced at the 2015Le Mans 24 Hours as part of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

A truly global effort, the GT-R has been created by a team of carefully selected experts in Japan, the US and Europe.

Unlike other LM P1 cars, the GT-R’s V6 3-litre twin turbo petrol engine sits in the front of the front-wheel- drive car, while the hybrid power is harvested from the front driveline to augment acceleration.

The race car features a host of unique and innovative features never before seen at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Our unique tyre package
The Nissan GT-R LM NISMO will race on Michelin 31/71-18 (front) and 20/71-16 (rear) tyres. The tyre package is dramatically different from our rivals.

While the front tyre on all the LM P1 factory teams are similar at 14 inches wide, Nissan has placed a priority on reducing aerodynamic drag with narrower rear tyres that are only nine inches wide.

The rear tyres on the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO also use a smaller diameter rim – 16 inches versus the 18 inch rims used on the front of the car.

Like no other car

Can you explain how the different power sources work on the GT-R?

We have a very modern but conventional V6 3-litre twin turbo petrol engine. This is a very efficient engine so it produces a large amount of power using the allotted fuel flow limit. The fuel flow limit is one of the new regulations at Le Mans – we’re not limited by the engine capacity or the boost pressure or the RPM of the engine – we’re limited by how many grammes of fuel per second we can burn.

So the more efficient you make the engine the more power you have because you are still burning the same amount of fuel whether you are efficient or inefficient so if you can make a very efficient engine you get a lot of power. We are burning a smaller amount of fuel, around 30% less than was used by a petrol engine at Le Mans in 2013, for example.

Why doesn’t the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO look like the other LM P1 car?

The regulations have allowed us the freedom to create a significantly different looking car.

Nissan are bold challengers who are prepared to innovate in order to get a high performance outcome so we’ve turned the whole concept of the conventional LM P1 car of 2014 on its head.

The result is that our car looks different as the cockpit has been moved significantly rearwards to accommodate the engine at the front of the car.

Why are the front tyres bigger than the rear?

The front tyres on the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO are bigger than the rear tyres – 14 inch wide front vs. 9 inch rear. This is due to the way that mass is distributed in the car. We have moved the weight bias forwards to give us traction for the front-engined, front-wheel drive. The car also runs on 18 inch rims on the front and 16 inch on the rear.

We’ve also moved the aero forwards so we’ve moved the capacity of the tyres forward to match the weight distribution. So the aero centre of pressure, the mass centre of gravity and the tyre capacity are all in harmony and that means we have bigger tyres at the front than the rear.

Why is the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO front wheel drive?

The Nissan GT-R LM NISMO is in automotive-speak a front-engined, front-wheel-drive car. The internal combustion engine drives the front wheels and the energy recovery system harvests energy from the front wheels.

We’ve used the relatively low-powered internal combustion engine to drive the front wheels and then we add power from the ERS to augment acceleration.

Nissan’s heartwarming “With Dad” Super Bowl commercial resonates with American families
  • Touching story depicts the struggle of work-life balance facing many American families
  • Nissan's upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans challenger, the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO, makes its world debut in front of more than 100 million viewers
  • Future Nissan sports sedan appears at the end of the commercial, with details to be announced in the future
  • Nissan will also donate $1 million, split between Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) and Habitat for Humanity, in conjunction with the commercial
NASHVILLE, Tenn - In the world of automotive advertising, Super Bowl Sunday is the one day of the year where pretty much anything goes. Nissan exemplified that strategy in its return to the Super Bowl ad ranks for the first time since 1997, scoring big today with a dramatic 90-second commercial titled "With Dad." The commercial combined a touching storyline with the debut of future Nissan race and production vehicles.

The story, which follows an up-and-coming race driver through his journey to the highest levels of motorsports competition, uses a narrative soundtrack provided by Harry Chapin's iconic "Cat's In the Cradle." It depicts the struggles of a father and mother to balance work and family while they raise their son. In the end, the cycle, so well known in Chapin's song, is broken.

"The spot depicts a journey that moms, dads and children face in trying to make family a priority while striving to balance work demands. Like many women and men in America, our dad cherishes the time he spends with his family, but the requirements of his job continually call him away," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations U.S., Nissan North America. "But as we see, both parents share equally in the courage, hard work and sacrifice required to keep the family strong as they raise their son."

In connection with the "With Dad" commercial Nissan will donate $1 million to help people build a better future for themselves and their families through a contribution in support of Habitat for Humanity and Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP).

"Beyond just the work-life balance depicted in the ad, many families all over the country are struggling to find affordable housing or are in need of assistance re-assimilating into family life after military service," said Diaz. "We're pleased to be making this donation, along with building awareness and exposure for the organizations' important causes."

Nissan is encouraging those who may have missed the "With Dad" spot or want to see it again to go to www.withdad.com or www.NissanUSA.com. The "With Dad" commercial, which debuted during the second quarter of today's game, will not be shown again on broadcast TV.

As for the images of fast cars shown in the spot – along with the historical Nissan racing footage used as a backdrop – they, too, were out of the ordinary. Shown for the first time anywhere was the new Nissan GT-R LM NISMO, which will contest the LM P1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the highest category in world sports car racing. The highly innovative front-engined, front-wheel drive vehicle, with its aerodynamic bodywork, is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine and a kinetic energy recovery system. It is a combination expected to produce around 1,250 horsepower under race conditions. Details on the upcoming Nissan sports sedan, which appears briefly in the spot, will be announced in the near future.

"We've packed a lot of story and surprises into one beautifully executed commercial," said Diaz. "After a long absence, it was not only great to be back in the big game, but to be back with such an impactful presence."

"With Dad" was developed in collaboration with TBWA\Chiat\Day, Los Angeles.

"I am feeling very proud of the whole team right now," said Nissan's Darren Cox. "For sure we have had problems but that's what happens when you innovate. Our engine is strong and we were able to quickly fix the other problems that we had. We have learnt an incredible amount at Le Mans and our battles will only make us stronger.

"Most LM P1 manufacturers don't finish Le Mans at their first attempt so it was important for us to hit this target," he continued. "The guys in the garage are the heroes this weekend and the drivers have all done an incredible job, sometimes in very difficult circumstances. They needed physical and mental strength in equal measure this weekend and every one of the nine delivered for us. We have done exactly what we needed to do. We dug in, we solved our problems, we exploited the limits of our current performance and we finished the Le Mans 24 Hours."

In addition to its fledgling LM P1 programme, Nissan provides engines to many of the LM P2 teams at Le Mans. Those teams did the Japanese manufacturer proud at Le Mans by taking the top seven finishing positions in the LM P2 class. The #47 KCMG Oreca-Nissan took the win, followed by last year's winner the JOTA Sport Gibson-Nissan, with the #26 G-Drive Ligier-Nissan taking the last podium place. Gaetan Paletou, Nissan's newest Lounge to Le Mans racer, unfortunately didn't get to race as his car retired before it was his turn to drive.

Nissan Completes Le Mans 24 Hour

LE MANS, FRANCE - Nissan's much-anticipated Le Mans challenger, the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO, made its race debut at the Le Mans 24 Hours this weekend. Such is the scale of the challenge to enter the top endurance class, Nissan set a target of getting one of it's three cars to the finish of the 24-hour race.

The #22 Nissan GT-R LM NISMO of Harry Tincknell (GB), Michael Krumm (GER) and Alex Buncombe (GB) took the chequered flag at 15:00hrs on Sunday afternoon after battling against the odds to complete the greatest race in the world.

For the first ten hours of the race the three GT-R LM NISMOs racked up the miles, all completing over 100 laps of the 13.629km Le Mans circuit in that time. The race was certainly not without drama for the #22 car, which had to contend with regular teething problems but also being hit by debris. The biggest emoment' for that car came just nine hours into the race when Tincknell ran into a large piece of debris whilst hurtling towards Indianapolis Corner at 340kph.

"We ran the entire race making sure we were mechanically sympathetic so we could rack up the miles and finish Le Mans," said Tincknell. "I certainly didn't expect to hit a massive lump of 'something' that was right in the middle of the racing line. The car was feeling good at that time too so it was a real shame to have to come in with damage and lose a chunk of time. We had struggled a bit in the early part of the race but I managed to immediately pick off seven or eight P2 cars and then concentrated on bringing the car home in one piece."

The Le Mans 24 Hours is a huge challenge for any manufacturer but to make your race debut at Le Mans requires Herculean effort. The Nissan NISMO team has worked non-stop since the GT-R LM NISMO first took to the track at the end of 2014. The car is still in the infancy stage of its development but a huge number of lessons were learnt this weekend as the team fought to keep the cars on the track.

The first casualty came close to the 10-hour mark when the #21 Nissan lost a wheel and despite the efforts of Tsugio Matsuda (JAP) was unable to return to the pits. Matsuda's team-mate Lucas Ordonez (ESP) started the race in #21 before handing the car over to Mark Shulzhitskiy (RUS), before the Japanese driver jumped in.

"It has been a tough Le Mans 24 Hours for us but we expected that," said Ordonez. "The start of the race went well. We had good, clean stints initially but then when we got into the night we were having some issues and then Tsugio (Matsuda) had a problem with one of the wheels and he couldn't make it back to the pits. Losing a front wheel when you have a front wheel drive car is not ideal. It was unfortunate but I have to thank the team, they made a superhuman effort over the last weeks and months and it's devastating for them to have their car not return to the pits. We have learnt so much this weekend. We have gathered so much data but we have learned how to work together as a race team. We now need to keep on learning, improving and developing for the future.

The #23 Nissan had perhaps the most painful exit from the race, retiring with a suspension issue. Jann Mardenborough (GB) and his team-mates Max Chilton (GB) and Olivier Pla (FRA) were delayed by a clutch issue at the start but they got stuck into the race and were looking good for a finish when Mardenborough was forced to pull off the circuit with just one hour of the race remaining.

"Missing the start meant that I missed out on any danger," said Mardenborough. "I had a really good opening run, triple stinting the tyres and just concentrated on keeping the car on the track. I was gutted to have to retire the car with just an hour to go. I tried everything I could to get going again but #23 had had enough. We ended the race with a car that was much better to drive than at the start as we continued making progress as we went through the race. Thanks to the crew who have worked so hard, particularly these past few weeks. We did something to be proud of today."
